Free Divorce Classes is it the way to go

FREE divorce classes teaching Melbourne couples how to make a quick and cheap exit from their marriages have raised the ire of family groups.

Participants will be able to leave the two-hour lessons, starting tomorrow night at Preston Library, with all the necessary paperwork filled out and ready to lodge with the Family Law Court.

The classes come as new court figures show 9032 Victorian couples divorced in the past financial year, up 4 per cent from 2008.

Family Council of Victoria secretary Bill Muehlenberg described the classes, run by Darebin Community Legal Centre, as "a production line for broken families".

"It doesn't make sense to make divorce any quicker or easier when the truth is studies have shown that 80 per cent of couples who undergo counselling when they are considering a split will still be together in five years' time," Mr Muehlenberg said.
